Planning a trip filled with art and culture? For a true artistic retreat, set your sights on Valdosta, Ga., where you’ll find a charming artisanal community abundant with beauty and culture. From awe-inspiring art galleries ready for exploration and phenomenal performances on stage to hands-on activities and experiences, Valdosta has something for everyone, every age.

Fill your itinerary with these top picks for a #VeryValdosta cultural experience.

Feast your eyes on fine arts

Calling all fine art aficionados! Put the Annette Howell Turner Center for the Arts at the top of your list. This premier regional arts center located in downtown Valdosta offers 30 exhibits annually, including a 600-piece East African art collection and more than 30 pieces of antique European fine porcelain. Some of the more prominent works on display at the Center’s 17,000 sq. ft gallery in past years included works by Lamar Dodd and Andy Warhol.

In addition to their ever-changing exhibits, the center offers art talks, concerts, book festivals and children’s events for visitors.

But wait! The fine arts fun doesn’t end there! While strolling through downtown, make a stop into Artists on Ashley to view featured works by local painters and potters Jeanne Cowart, Annette Crosby, Ellen DeWar, Walter Hobbs, Deb House and Pam Scruggs. For more #VeryValdosta local art with a Southern touch, peruse paintings, metalwork, ceramics, woodwork, glass and jewelry at Kaleidoscope Gallery & Emporium. Their one-of-a-kind pieces are great souvenirs from your trip to South Georgia.

For up-and-coming artistic talent, the Dedo Maranville Fine Arts Gallery has amazing works of art year-round by VSU students and faculty, as well as regional artists. See the 2019-2020 gallery schedule here.

Watch stellar performances

For performing arts lovers, Valdosta has lots of high caliber options to choose from.

The Presenter Series at the Annette Howell Turner Center for the Arts is particularly special and will have you feeling like you’re front row at a Broadway show! The series of nationally touring productions feature powerhouse casts of actors, singers, musicians and dancers. Valdosta visitors and Series fans look forward to the upcoming performances of Tony and Grammy award-winning musicals Once (Jan. 28, 2020) and Jersey Boys (March 12, 2020). Past performances included classics like Cats, Chicago, Hairspray and Of Mice and Men. Click here to purchase tickets for these shows.

For a one-of-a-kind #VeryValdosta theatre performance, attend a play at Dosta Playhouse, an early-1940s Art Moderne-style landmark that’s home to the Theatre Guild Valdosta. Some popular past shows include Steel Magnolias, The Jungle Book, Stuart Little, To Kill a Mockingbird, Charlotte’s Web and James and the Giant Peach. Check out upcoming shows here.
