July 4th is finally here so happy long weekend, everyone! Nothing says Independence Day like cookouts, parties, ice-cold drinks and great food. But to add a little extra kick to the celebration, there are a bunch of cool things happening in and around Valdosta in honor of this special holiday. So let the sparks fly!
Work up an appetite for some delicious BBQ after completing the LHS Independence Day 5K! The race begins at the VECA School near the corner of Baytree Road and Azalea Drive at 7:30 a.m. The cost is $10 per person per entry. For details, click here. For all you animal lovers, be sure to grab your running shoes, and your dogs, to participate in the first U.S.A. Rescue Dog Jog! This 5K race is dog-friendly with doggie pools and goodies for the four-legged finishers. For details, click here.
Several Independence Day events kick off Sat., June 29! Hahira begins the weekend with a day of arts and crafts, food, entertainment and, of course, fireworks, which begin at 9 p.m. Lake Park hosts events, such as catch and release fishing, food, water slide and bounce houses from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Fireworks begin at 9:30 p.m. at Tom’s Pond so bring your lawn chair and get the best seat in the house. Wild Adventures Theme Park has fireworks displays Thurs., July 4, and Fri., July 5. Come out for a day of fun at Splash Island Waterpark and stay for the show. Make sure to be there early and claim your spot on the boardwalk next to Dockside Restaurant for the best view of the fireworks, which begin at dark. The July 4 fireworks show is part of “Celebrate America Week,” which runs July 1-7. All military personnel who have served will receive free admission into the park with a valid military ID or DD-214 form. Valdosta-Lowndes Parks & Recreation Authority is lighting up the night sky with its annual Fireworks Spectacular show Thur., July 4, between I-75 Exits 16 and 18. The fireworks display is best viewed from the Valdosta Mall side and the show begins between 9:15-9:30 p.m.
